9 Resolutions for People Who Remember Life Before the Internet

To a certain generation, New Year’s resolutions usually involve punishing ourselves with kale smoothies and grueling gym sessions. But let’s be honest: at 50 and beyond, we’ve earned the right to skip the misery.

Instead of setting goals that feel like a second job, why not choose resolutions that actually make life better? Here are nine easy, “grown-up” ways to kick off the year without breaking a sweat (or a hip).

1. Master the 10-Minute Movement

Forget the hour-long cardio classes where the music is too loud and everyone is wearing neon spandex. Science shows that just 10 minutes of movement can jumpstart your heart health.

  • The Goal: A brisk walk, a bit of light stretching, or even an aggressive living room dance to a 70s hit.
  • The Perk: You’re done before you even have time to talk yourself out of it.

2. Hydrate Like You Mean It

Our “thirst signals” tend to get a bit muffled as we age. Drinking more water isn’t just about glowing skin; it helps with energy and keeping those joints lubricated.

  • The Trick: Keep a nice bottle nearby. If it looks expensive, you’re more likely to use it. Or try infusing it with slices of cucumber or lemon.
  • Bonus: It gives you a great excuse to get up and walk to the bathroom more often. See? Bonus steps!

3. Eat “Real” Food (Mostly)

You don’t need a restrictive diet. Just try to crowd out the processed stuff with things that actually grew in the ground or had a mother.

  • Aim for one extra vegetable at dinner.
  • Swap the sugary afternoon snack for a handful of nuts.

4. Give Your Brain a Cross-Training Session

Sudoku is great, but your brain craves novelty. Learning something new creates new neural pathways—it’s like “The Fountain of Youth” for your mind.

  • Try This: Learn three phrases in a new language or finally figure out how to use that “cloud” everyone keeps talking about. Maybe even take up a new hobby, such as photography or a musical instrument.

5. Prioritize “Sleep Hygiene”

Sleep is the ultimate repair shop. If you’re tossing and turning, it’s time to get strict with your bedroom environment.

  • Keep the room cool and dark.
  • Ban the smartphone 30 minutes before bed. (Facebook will still be there in the morning, promise)

6. Curate Your Social Circle

At this stage of the game, life is too short for “energy vampires.” Spend your time with people who make you laugh until your eyes leak.

  • Resolution: Call one old friend a week or join a local hobby group.
  • Connection is the secret sauce to longevity.

7. Declutter One Small Space

Don’t try to Marie Kondo the whole house in a weekend. Pick one “junk drawer” or that scary shelf in the pantry.

  • The Rule: If you haven’t used it since the Clinton administration, it’s probably safe to let it go.

8. Practice the “Daily Gratitude” Pause

It sounds a bit “woo-woo,” but taking 30 seconds to acknowledge something good—like a perfect cup of coffee or a green light when you’re late—actually rewires your brain for happiness.

  • Write down three good things before bed. It beats counting sheep.

9. Schedule Your “Service” Appointments

Think of yourself like a classic car: you need regular maintenance to stay on the road.

  • Book your annual physical, the dentist, and the eye doctor all at once.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to reinvent yourself. You’re already pretty great. This year, just focus on the small tweaks that keep the engine humming and the spirit bright. Happy New Year!
