A Collagen Based Protein Bar That Makes You Feel Fuller and Shrinks Your Waistline

Researchers in Spain have developed a protein bar with a special kind of collagen—but not just the one for joints and skin. This one is designed to actually make you feel full, and the results for weight, blood pressure, and liver health are promising!

The Science Behind the ‘Fullness’ Factor

The secret weapon in this new approach is a specifically treated bovine collagen (animal fiber) with two key properties:

  • Massive Swelling: The researchers modified the collagen so that when you mix it with water and it hits the acidic environment of your stomach, it swells dramatically—by over 1900%!
  • Low Digestibility: Because it’s specially treated, this collagen doesn’t break down easily in your stomach (less than 50% digestibility).

Essentially, it turns into a temporary, satisfying gel in your stomach, helping you feel fuller and more satisfied before you even start your meal, which is the whole point—to induce satiation.

The 3-Month Human Study

The researchers tested this modified collagen in a 12-week trial on adults who were overweight or obese, which included people up to age 65. The goal was to see if this “fullness” effect would lead to better health outcomes.

  • The Routine: Participants in the collagen group ate two 10g collagen-enriched bars per day (20g total collagen), 45 minutes before lunch and dinner, along with a glass of water.
  • The Diet: Both the collagen group and the control group received the same general healthy dietary recommendations. Crucially, neither group was put on a strict, prescribed weight-loss diet.

The Exciting Results for Weight and Health

After just three months, the difference between the groups was significant. It appears that the collagen helped people naturally eat less because they felt so much less hungry.

The collagen group saw significantly greater improvements in several key health markers compared to the control group:

  • Weight Loss: They lost an average of 3.0 kg (about 6.6 lbs) over 3 months, compared to 1.5 kg (about 3.3 lbs) for the control group.
  • Body Composition: They had a greater reduction in total fat, including the most concerning type, visceral fat (the deep fat around the organs).
  • Blood Pressure: They experienced a significant drop in Systolic Blood Pressure (the top number), which is a huge factor for our age group.
  • Liver Health: They saw a reduction in the Fatty Liver Index (FLI).

The best part? These benefits were tied directly to the volunteers reporting a reduced sensation of hunger and an increased feeling of fullness and satisfaction.

Takeaway

The study shows promise as a simple “fullness helper” to get a better handle on our weight as we get older, without the stress of constant calorie counting. Now we just have to hope some enterprising heath bar company turns the idea into a reality 😊
