The Lagree Method: An Alternative to Pilates

The Lagree Method was created by Sebastian Lagree in 2001 and has many similarities to Pilates with a few core differences.

Lagree Fitness combines Pilates with elements of strength training and cardio. It’s a more intense workout (on a more expensive machine) that emphasizes slow (really slow), controlled movements and muscle engagement. What makes it unique is its ability to perform a challenging full-body workout in a short amount of time.

Here are some of the advantages of the Lagree Method:

  • Intensity & Efficiency: A Lagree workout is more intense than traditional Pilates, merging strength, cardio, endurance, balance, and flexibility in a single session.
  • Muscle Endurance: Traditional Pilates is more focused on core strength and flexibility. The Lagree method also challenges muscular endurance to sculpt and tone the body.
  • Innovation in Equipment: The Lagree method relies on the Megaformer, a piece of equipment that allows for a wider range of movements and offers more resistance and functionality, making it more suitable for his high-intensity workouts.
  • Low Impact: Despite its intensity, the Lagree method is low-impact, thus ensuring its safety and reducing the risk of injury, making it accessible to people of all fitness levels.

 

The Megaformer

Like Pilates, the Lagree Method uses a machine called the Megaformer to more efficiently perform the exercises. However, the Lagree Megaformer is like a Pilates Reformer on steroids. It’s controlled by a remote control that can adjust the resistance dynamically as a person works out. What’s really cool is if you are in an instructor led class, the instructor can dynamically manipulate the machines of every student automatically from a single remote control. This ability to adjust the resistance of the springs in the machine automatically without the participant having to get off the machine saves considerable time and forces muscles to be engaged for the entire length of the workout. Net result, a more intense workout in less time.

 

How can I get access to a Megaformer Machine?

Megaformer machines start at around $1000 and go upwards to $10,000. However, before you invest in a machine, it’s advisable to take a class at one of the over 600 Lagree Fitness studios worldwide.
