Addressing the Health-Longevity Gap

We’re all living longer these days, which is fantastic! But while our global life expectancy has skyrocketed over the last century, our healthy life expectancy hasn’t quite kept up. In the U.S., there’s a rather unfortunate 12-year gap between how long we can expect to stick around and how long we can do so without feeling like we’re held together with duct tape and good intentions.

The Quest for Youth (and Functionality)

Enter the XPRIZE Healthspan competition, launched in November 2023. This ambitious initiative isn’t just about adding years to our lives; it’s about adding life to our years. The goal? To incentivize brilliant minds to cook up proactive, accessible therapeutic solutions that can rewind muscle, cognition, and immune function by at least 10 years (with an optimistic target of 20 years!) in folks aged 50-80. And here’s the kicker: they want to see these changes happen within a single year.

Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, the visionary founder and executive chairman of XPRIZE, emphasized the global reach of this quest. “The next breakthrough in aging could originate from scientists and entrepreneurs anywhere globally,” he noted, hinting that the next fountain of youth might just be bubbling up in a lab you’ve never heard of. He added that this competition aims to challenge our collective beliefs about what’s truly possible when it comes to defying the hands of time.

A Smorgasbord of Solutions

The response to this challenge has been nothing short of astounding, with over 600 teams from 58 countries throwing their hats (and their scientific brilliance) into the ring. A select 100 teams have now advanced to the semifinalist stage. Among them, the Top 40 Healthspan teams have already snagged $250,000 each as Milestone 1 award winners. This funding is their golden ticket to support ongoing research and jumpstart clinical trials.

The proposed solutions are a fascinating mix, covering everything from biologic therapies and drugs (both new and old) to lifestyle interventions (yes, eating your veggies still counts!), medical devices, and even nutraceuticals. Many teams are taking a personalized approach, combining strategies like a bespoke diet paired with cutting-edge drugs or even cell therapies. These innovative treatments are targeting a wide array of biological systems, from metabolism and inflammation to stem cells, showing that there’s no single magic bullet, but rather a whole arsenal of possibilities.

Jamie Justice, Ph.D., executive director of XPRIZE Healthspan, couldn’t hide her excitement. “We are delighted by the unprecedented global response to this competition and the powerful, innovative thinking and approaches proposed by these teams,” she enthused. She’s clearly eager to see these diverse strategies, which couple breakthrough innovations with real-world feasibility and safety, move into clinical trials.

The Road Ahead: Trials and a Grand Finale

Now comes the exciting, albeit rigorous, part: all 100 semifinalist teams are gearing up for early-stage clinical trials. They’ll need to submit their data by April 2026 for the next judging round. The journey from lab findings to clinical testing is a big one, involving a maze of safety assessments, regulatory approvals, and finding the right testing partners and funding.

Come July 2026, XPRIZE will reveal the 10 finalists, each receiving a substantial $10 million milestone prize. These elite teams will then embark on the final phase, testing their therapeutic solutions for up to one year in adults aged 50-80, a process that will run from 2026 to 2029. The University of Utah and its Data Coordinating Center will be lending a crucial hand in supporting these trials. The grand culmination will be in 2030, when the ultimate winner will be awarded an astounding $81 million.
